Howe Park Shooting Wounds Four People Injured in Sacramento County's Arden-Arcade Neighborhood

Officials in Sacramento County are investigating a shooting that erupted on the evening of April 18 at Howe Community Park in the Arden-Arcade area as officers were dispersing an unsanctioned gathering of multiple hundreds of people.

What Led to the Shooting

Sacramento County law enforcement initially got calls about Howe Park at about half past six in the evening after getting calls of individuals who may have had concealed firearms. Soon after, a follow-up call was made regarding a possible physical fight happening at the location.

Air support scanned the area from the air but could not confirm any ongoing fight. However, deputies found that a crowd of several hundred had packed into the park without official sanction.

How the Shooting Unfolded

Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies set about removing people from the park by surrounding the park and making announcements instructing the assembled crowd to leave immediately. Roughly 15 minutes were allotted for the crowd to leave.

At the height of the dispersal effort that upwards of 20 gunshots echoed through the night. The sudden gunfire sparked chaos as hundreds ran. Officers at once began identifying shooting victims.

The Shooting Victims

Ultimately, four individuals were identified as having gunshot wounds. All four — a group of one female and three male victims ranging in age through their in their mid to late twenties — were transported to nearby hospitals. Emergency physicians noted that two victims sustained immediate injuries, one sustained moderate wounds, and one victim's wounds were minor. In a positive development, all four were expected to survive.

Sacramento fire crews arrived on scene and helped care for those who had been shot prior to hospital transport.

Physical Evidence

The center of the incident was determined to have occurred on the Cottage Way side of the park adjacent to the Home Depot Sacramento park shooting 2026 located at the 2200 block of Howe Ave. Investigators found additional spent rounds throughout the Cottage Way area. Projectile impacts were noted in the wrought iron perimeter fencing adjacent to the Home Depot. This evidence showed that at least one of the shooters had been shooting in a southerly direction from along Cottage Way targeting the Home Depot. That Home Depot location was put under lockdown as a precaution. Crime scene technicians and detectives kept processing evidence through the early morning hours.

Suspects Detained

Reports confirmed via scanner audio established that a suspect Kia was intercepted in an area within Solano County. Four detainees were held for questioning. Deputies were dispatched to Solano County to collect the individuals for processing in Sacramento County. Video that was reviewed made clear that two individuals had fired weapons.
